Septic Program

Septic systems are a safe and effective method for treating wastewater if they are sized, sited, and maintained properly. If not, they can contaminate nearby wells and streams with bacteria, nutrients, toxic substances, and oxygen depleting wastes.
Approximately 5% of lots in Banklick Creek watershed use septic systems. Some of these septic systems may be operating improperly. This could be a significant source of bacteria such as E. coli and fecal coliform in Banklick Creek.
Grant funds may be available to repair failing septic systems in our area and to reduce bacteria getting into our creeks. This voluntary program is geared toward residents with septic systems located near a stream to replace straight pipes and/or repair failing septic systems, especially those that have a strong impact on Banklick Creek and its tributaries.
